Muscle Power of Mussels

About the Idea

Meet Aaisha. Aaisha is developing a mussel-inspired, eco-friendly adhesive made from natural proteins and iron-based crosslinkers that creates strong bonds while reducing pollution.

Why did you enter the 3M Young Scientist Challenge?

I entered 3M Young Scientist Challenge because I enjoy real solutions to everyday problems taking inspiration from the world around us. Conventional adhesives release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can contribute to air pollution and health concerns. I addressed this by developing a mussel-inspired adhesive designed to reduce or replace. This competition encourages creativity, experimentation, and persistence—skills that are important for becoming a future scientist and leader. It was a chance to test my ideas and contribute something useful to society. This challenge motivates me to combine my interest and strength into something cool and fun. By studying natural adhesion systems and experimenting with different bio-based materials and crosslinking agents, I aim to create a safer, more sustainable alternative that still performs effectively across different surfaces. This challenge gives me the opportunity to share my idea and learn from experts in the field of innovation and materials science.

What is your favorite invention of the last 100 years, and why?

My favorite invention in the last 100 years is CRISPR gene editing because it allows scientists to precisely edit DNA and change how we understand and treat genetic diseases. I find it powerful that CRISPR can target the root cause of illnesses instead of only treating symptoms. It also has uses in agriculture, such as creating crops that are more resistant to drought and disease, which can improve food security. What makes CRISPR especially impressive is its accuracy and efficiency compared to older methods. It shows how studying natural biological systems can lead to breakthrough technologies that can improve health, science, and the environment.

In 15 years I hope to be...

In 15 years, I aspire to be an environmental scientist because I'm passionate about studying nature and keeping it clean and sustainable. I also look forward to collaborating with people who share similar goals and interests. By working together, I hope to contribute to meaningful solutions and help make a positive impact on the world through science, technology, and innovation.
