Navigating Braille: The Crucial Role of Research
By Ishaan Iyer | August 04, 2023
Hello all. I'm Ishaan Iyer, a resident of the vibrant city of Los Angeles, California. I am one among the 10 finalists selected for the 3M Young Scientist Challenge by 3M and Discovery Education. Today, I want to chat with you about how research can really help us understand the challenges and come up with the best solutions.
The most challenging aspect of gathering information was delving into the realm of braille and its accompanying devices. It required me to explore a multitude of resources to acquire the necessary knowledge. Had I not undertaken this thorough investigation, I might not have been aware of the limited number of braille readers. This could have led me to reconsider my project, potentially hindering my grasp of the significance of braille. Thus, conducting comprehensive research is of utmost importance when aiming to address problems and innovate.
Moreover, it's worth noting that in the absence of diligent research, striving for improvement becomes exceedingly arduous. A profound understanding of both the intricacies of the subject matter and the project's purpose is imperative to enact enhancements. Research serves as a tool to decipher the finer details and identify areas where further improvements can be made, enhancing the overall outcome.
Research functions as a catalyst within any project, providing essential information, illuminating the path ahead, and propelling progress towards excellence. Without research, it's akin to embarking on a mountain climb without a map. Interestingly, my dedication to research and the desire to contribute solutions led me to become a part of the 3M Young Scientist Challenge, where I was fortunate to be mentored by one of those brilliant 3M scientists who possess a knack for problem-solving akin to superheroes!
