"Tethys": Water Lead Contamination Detector

About the Idea

Gitanjali hopes to reduce the time of lead detection in water by using a mobile app, to connect over Bluetooth to get status of water, almost immediately.

Why did you enter the 3M Young Scientist Challenge?

I entered the Young Scientist Challenge because it combines my love of science, solving problems by new inventions, and creating films.

What is your favorite invention of the last 100 years, and why?

My favorite invention is Medical Resonance Imaging or MRI. While X-Ray was a remarkable invention that allowed us to peek inside bodies without surgery, it was limited in clarity and detail. MRI revolutionized the medical profession allowing early detection and treatments for aliments as diverse as, knee pain to Parkinson’s disease.

In 15 years I hope to be...

A geneticist or an epidemiologist. I think I would enjoy working the field of diseases and someday hopefully find cures for some that cause lot of pain.

I would tell everyone who is interested in STEM to just have fun! Just have fun with science and keep digging deep for solutions. If you do not succeed the first time, that’s OK! There is never a limit to the number of tries it takes to accomplish a goal.
