Illuminations

About the Idea

Illuminations are wearable, fashion-forward LED garments and jewelry used to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder in the long, dark winter months of northern communities.

Why did you enter the 3M Young Scientist Challenge?

I am very excited to share what I have designed and created to help people with Seasonal Affective Disorder. There are many people in my community who suffer from S.A.D., and this is the perfect opportunity to show what I have made and receive feedback on ways that I can improve my products.

What is your favorite invention of the last 100 years, and why?

While working on this project, I realized that LED lights are a remarkable invention. They are energy efficient, come in all different shapes and sizes, and have many applications.

In 15 years I hope to be...

Science and fashion have always amazed me, and this project has given me an opportunity to explore both subjects. I am hoping to get a degree in engineering, apply that knowledge, and create innovative textiles.

“Many of the world’s most exciting innovations are fusions of science and technology with art and design; never be afraid to unite the two.”
