Dr. PJ Flanigan
Sr. Research Manager in the Biosciences Laboratory
3M Corporate Research Material Laboratory
As a senior research manager in the Corporate Labs at 3M, PJ champions the biopharma R&D platform and oversees the research of chemists, biochemists, and chemical engineers. Over her 24 years at 3M, she has contributed to projects that enable better, smarter and safer healthcare as part of the medical solutions, oral care solutions, and consumer healthcare businesses. Some projects she worked on include: Latex-Free Coban, fluoride varnish, ceramic pre-shaded dental crowns, clear orthodontic brackets, clear bandages, silicone adhesive bandages, and acne patches. PJ is an inclusive leader who brings enthusiasm, energy, and accountability to her endeavors. She enjoys mentoring colleagues and new employees across the company, and is especially interested in mentoring women in STEM.
PJ’s love for science developed at a young age through solving brain teasers. This has led her to want to spark that same level of interest and curiosity in other young minds. She volunteers as a Visiting Wizard to local elementary schools showcasing science demonstrations and hands-on activities. PJ has also served on the Board of Directors at the Math and Science Academy High School in Minnesota. When not working, PJ enjoys traveling, hiking, and spending time with her family.
PJ earned her bachelor’s in Chemistry from Wellesley College and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
A problem solver at heart, PJ coaches research teams to invent novel solutions using collaborations between chemistry, biology, and engineering. PJ enjoys managing experts with different technical backgrounds and values diverse perspectives.
