Tip Tuesday: Celebrate (and learn with) Black History Month

Celebrate Black History Month With Amazing Scientific Innovations

Every February, America celebrates the important role that African Americans play in the United States’ past, present, and future. So as you continue working on your 3M Young Scientist Challenge entry this month, look toward African American scientists, engineers, and inventors for inspiration.

Did you know, for instance, that Thomas L. Jennings was the first African American to receive a U.S. patent? Or that George Washington Carver performed groundbreaking research on plant biology and invented 300 different products that can be made from peanuts? Or how about that Dr. Patricia Bath helped improve vision around the world with her invention of a surgical laser tool that corrects cataracts?

Like you, these innovators used their creativity and scientific knowledge to make the world a better place!
